Chardon Gate Stables'
Rules and Policies
At Chardon Gate Stables, safety, respect, and good horsemanship are at the heart of everything we do. These guidelines help us maintain a positive, professional environment for all riders, visitors, and horses.
Please take a moment to review our policies before participating in lessons, boarding, or events.
Barn Rules
-
SMOKING IS PROHIBITED on the property.
-
Release forms must be signed before anyone may handle a horse, ride, or work in a horse traffic area (e.g., field/arenas/stalls). Releases should be completed for riders less than eighteen years of age by the legal guardian prior to the child handling a horse, riding, or working in a horse traffic area.
-
ASTM approved helmets are mandatory for EVERYONE on the property while mounted on a horse. NO EXCEPTIONS. It is also recommended that everyone wear a helmet while riding on the roads / trails.
-
Jumping is only allowed on your own horse or with written permission from the owner and CGS management prior to jumping. No jumping is allowed without a CGS approved trainer IN the area (either in a lesson, or being supervised by a trainer). Jumping is defined as any fence/object where the horse may physically jump to get over it. Ground poles are not included under the definition of “jumping” and may be used when not in a lesson.
-
Anyone who is not riding or training must remain outside the area when horses are being worked. In the indoor area, that space is on the side of the barrier near the parking lot or by the entrance in the middle of the aisle. Visitors should not enter the area or pastures at any time without being accompanied by a boarder, trainer, or management.
-
No guests may ride or handle horses without prior written permission from the owner of said horse and permission from Chardon Gate Management. All guests must read and agree to the posted farm rules and any questions directed to CGS management, and all guests must sign the Liability Waiver prior to handling or riding said horse. All boarders are fully responsible for their guests whether they themselves are present or not.
-
Please leave your pets at home. If you bring your dog(s) to the barn, they must be leashed and with a person at all times. Please don’t put your dogs in the horses stalls or club room while riding.
-
No children under the age of eighteen are allowed to ride without an adult present. No children under fourteen are allowed in pastures/arenas/stalls without adult supervision.
-
Trail/road riding alone is strongly discouraged and should not be done. Ride at your own risk and please take a cell phone with you. Leave a note on the board when you are expected back and where you went.
-
The barn aisle and wash rack areas are to be kept free of grooming tools, equipment, hair, and manure. Hoses should be coiled after use. PLEASE CLEAN UP after you and your horse. This includes parking lots and arenas as well. Muck buckets and pitch forks are provided and cleaned regularly.
-
Lunging / turnout in arenas: Lunging in the arenas is allowed with permission of the others riding. Many horses are sensitive to whips so for everyone’s safety, please refrain from cracking the whip while others around you are mounted. Only supervised turnout is allowed in the arenas and for 30 min increments.
-
Chardon Gate Stables have the right to assign and re-assign paddocks and stalls in order to minimize dangerous or nuisance situations or wear and tear on the facility. Turnout is based on field and weather conditions and horse compatibility as decided on by CGS management.
-
Please use the whiteboards for communication. All notes need to be signed. Please remember they are under camera surveillance so keep all notes positive or constructive in nature. Notes will usually be left up for 2-3 days unless otherwise noted.
-
Please notify Chardon Gate Stables management of any necessary repairs, maintenance problems, complaints, or needed supplies as soon as possible.
-
Boarding at Chardon Gate Stables is a privilege and we enjoy your business. Actions such as stealing, use of narcotics/alcohol, flagrant damage or destruction of stable property, abuse of animals, physical or verbal abuse of CGS personnel or clients, or any other actions that are deemed detrimental to CGS will not be tolerated and will result in the immediate expulsion from the premises as well as a breach of the boarding contract.
-
You are hereby advised that direct loss, damage, or injury to your horse, tack, equipment or trailer is not covered by Chardon Gate Stables insurance, while on these premises. You as the owner of these personal property items have the financial interest in these items, and therefore it is up to you to be sure that they are insured under a homeowner’s, tenant’s, or other insurance policy, or under a separate policy. This is also the case in terms of loss, injury, damage or death of a horse.
-
Shareboarding is permitted, but must be communicated to CGS management. All payments for board, etc. are the responsibility of the boarder and the shareboarder should work directly with the boarder to manage costs. Shareboarders have the same responsibilities as boarders listed above.
-
All supplies and tack must be kept in boxes or totes with covers in the designated areas. There is space approved for one trunk, one saddle rack, and one bridle rack for each horse that is in a stall at CGS. For pasture boarded horses, this privilege will be available at an additional fee, space allowing.
-
All trainers must be pre-approved and must meet the current liability insurance requirements.
-
Please do not post any signs, forms, supplies on any walls or stalls without permission from management. Leave equipment and management can install property.
-
Security camera policy: The purpose of the camera system is to provide safety, security, and accountability to protect the welfare of our guests, employees, horses, and Chardon Gate Stables LLC. All video information is the property of CGS LLC with limited storage time. Any review of video is at the sole discretion of CGS and any and all legal requirements. To see a video, please fill out a request for what/where/when/why the video is needed and CGS will approve/deny the request.

3. Governing Law / Time Limitation / Attorneys’ Fees / Jury Waiver
This Release shall be governed by and enforced under the laws of the State of Illinois. All disputes shall be resolved exclusively by the state court in Lake County, Illinois, to whose jurisdiction Participant submits.
